Treatments for Asthma
For acute episodes, conventional treatment must be the mainstay, particularly
in severe cases. This involves a step-wise approach using inhalers for
relief or prevention of symptoms, adding in anti-inflammatory medication,
including steroids if necessary, for severe cases.
Homeopathy (and Isopathy) can be an additional help in acute attacks,
but is particularly helpful in chronic, recurring situations, especially
where there is a strong family history.
Food allergy and intolerance can have a major part to play and identification
and elimination of certain foods or additives can have a major benefit.
Nutrition is also important.
Yoga, hypnotherapy and other relaxation techniques also have good evidence
of benefit.
Herbal Medicine has been shown in a number of trials to be beneficial
in the treatment of asthma.
Acupuncture is also useful if used regularly, initially weekly treatments
are reduced to, possibly monthly, enabling reduction of conventional
medication in many cases.
In our experience, the best approach is usually a combination of several
different methods.
